AlgolW Introduction and History

AlgolW was one of the successful languages developed on the base of Algol 60. It was developed by Niklaus Wirth, Tony Hoare and was the starting point for his famous line of languages (AlgolW, Pascal, Modula2, ...). Wirth and Hoare developed this language (around 1965-1966) as a proposal to change Algol 60.

But another proposal, by Van Wijngaarden, was chosen by the committee and was to evolve into Algol 68. This language (Algol 68) was totally unsuccessful when compared with the Wirth's line.

Concepts of AlgolW are in the article "A Contribution to the Development of ALGOL" by Niklaus Wirth and C. A. R. Hoare
